Salon owner Elizabeth Roesel is an Atlanta native. Her formal education in Art, Music, and Cultural Anthropology fueled her desire to combine these fields of study into a career in the Health and Beauty Industry. She devoted five more years towards further education in the field of Cosmetology. Dismayed by the lack of health and beauty in the profession she loved, she decided to focus on making her industry cleaner, personable, sustainable, more compassionate, and less toxic.
Elizabeth opened Terra Mater in 1990 as one of the first Aveda Concept Salons. Her mission has held true from its conception:

Terra Mater means Mother Earth. As pre-modern cultures have shown us, "She, Mother Earth, has always taken care of us and provided us with health and beauty. We must also take care of Her."
